Some light sunning to the spine and a small tide mark to the bottom edge at the spine. An unusually crisp and clean copy in collectable condition. 486 pages, text in Afrikaans. The title, in Afrikaans translates as ‘Food for the Connoisseur’. With more than 1000 recipes it endeavours to cover the full spectrum of cooking. More than a recipe book, it provides an historic look at South African eating habits. Long forgotten dishes such as penguin eggs, roast flamingo, tortoise in aspic and Korhaan stew are described along with many more common and traditional dishes. The is also a chapter on ‘Veldkos’ or bush food. Leipoldt was much more than a food writer. He published many works, mostly in Afrikaans, both poetry and prose. A medical doctor, during World War 1 he was appointed medical officer to General Louis Botha and accompanied him during the South West African Campaign. He stood as a candidate for Smuts’ South African Party in the 1924 general election and was editor of a number of prestigious South African journals.
