The Hudson’s Bay Company was the most important enterprise of the fur trade era, and survives in Canada today the oldest commercial enterprise in North America. It was once the largest land owner in the world (“Rupert’s Land”) and controlled the largest portion of the fur trade through its headquarters at York Factory on Hudson’s Bay.
