The first English edition of the first published Afrikaans cookbook. Early South African food writer, C. Louis Leipoldt did not hold the book in high esteem. Stating that his disappointment stemmed from the political connotations of naming “ordinary fruit cakes” after famous Boer leaders from the Anglo-Boer War period. In fact President Steyn’s Cake, President Kruger’s Cake and Genls. De la Rey, Botha and de Wet’s Cakes are the most complicated of the cake recipes in the book. I fear that Mrs. Dijkman may have been running low on names since there are 85 cake recipes in this edition. With XXXIII chapters, including “Various Useful Recipes” with one for curing drunkards and another for mending umbrella handles. “Books Registry Act 1888” stamp to the fep and title page. Boards somewhat grubby, but still a very good copy. 200 pages. First English Edition. Condition: Very good. Hardcover. Cloth boards. Some edge-wear.
