A novel set in Potchefstroom during the Anglo-Boer War. According to local historian Lennie Gouws, the story is “peppered with real-life people” from the era, though it is often impossible to distinguish between historical fact and Pirow’s fictional inventions. One notable episode involves the protagonist, Piet, using firecrackers, oxen, and a mule to outmanoeuvre the British and recover approximately 250 horses rounded up from Boer farms.
Like Pirow’s other literary works, such as Ashambeni, the book is often viewed through the lens of his controversial far-right political career. It was published during a period when Pirow was attempting a political comeback following his leadership of the fascist “New Order” movement.
