An interactive artist’s book with ‘play elements’ of buzzing wood, grains of sand making noise, reeds, wickerwork, bamboo, nettles, bark and handmade paper. Housed in a unique binding, slipcase and jute cloth bag. 68 original works by the artists, wood and linocuts, lithographs, etchings, mixed media etc. Some signed, and 26 reproductions of drawings by the Karaja Indians. Printed by the DĂĽrer Press, this copy is one of 25 ‘artist’s and publisher’s copies’, numbered in roman numerals. A further 110 copies were produced, 55 copies by Reclam Verlag in Leipzig and another 55 at Galerie Brusberg in West Berlin. The artist’s and publisher’s copies exceedingly rare. The construction of the book allows it to be dismantled and reassembled…”The book turned out to be an exhibition that can be carried in a bag […] Whoever deals with the object will soon find that its most recent tradition points to the mid-sixties. At the time, for example, with Michael Buthe and Dieter Roth, a ‘metamorphosis’ of the book emerged: book not as a conventional information medium, but as an art object, and indeed beyond the aesthetically sublimated painter’s book that came from Paris.” (Lang, Lothar, Die WeltbĂĽhne, issue 36 or 1986) It contains a text on Native American myths by Lajos Boglár, an essay, “The Obsession of Modernity” by Klaus Werner, the “Quechua Lyrik” from Peru and the legendary speech “We are part of the Earth” by the Native American Chief Seattle, delivered to the 14th American President Franklin Pierce in 1855. The speech was in response to the white man’s request to purchase their land. “Man cannot own the earth any more than he can own the sky, the freshness of the air, or the glitter of the water.” Large folding woodcuts, lithographs and original signed works of mixed media. A few of the folding artworks with creases to the edges and one with a small perforation to the corner. Some off-setting to a few works. Signed by the artists and numbered IX of XXV on the colophon.
