Papus was a pseudonym of Dr. Gérard Encausse, the French occultist and founder of the Martinest Order. Arthur Edward Waite, who wrote the preface for this second edition was an American-born British poet and scholarly mystic who wrote extensively on occult and esoteric matters, and was the co-creator of the Rider-Waite tarot deck, advertised for sale at the front of the volume.
