Four volumes bound in full calf. Marbled endpapers and page edges. Hinges tender. Volume I, portrait and 6 plates, volume II, 5 plates, volume III, frontis and 4 plates and volume IV, 5 plates. Complete with 22 plates in total. Intermittent foxing and thumbing to the pages, with oxidation to a number of plates. Volume I inscribed on the title page as a gift to John Allen and dated 2 July 1806. John Allen (b.1780 Dublin – died France 1855) was a United Irishman committed to an independent Irish Republic. After a failed attempt with Robert Emmet in 1803 to renew the United Irish insurrection crushed five years before, he went into French exile and served with distinction in the army of Napoleon.
