Appears to be the prayer book of Catherine Pelham-Clinton (1727-11760), Countess of Lincoln. She died on 27 July and it is inscribed “This was my Dearest Dears Common Prayer Book. Clumber Oct. 11th 1760. Lincoln” by her late husband Henry Fiennes Pelham-Clinton, 2nd Duke of Newcastle (1720-1794), known as Lord Lincoln. The prayer book was included in the Sale of Clumber Library at Sothebys in 1937/1938 and it is again recorded in a Sothebys sale in 1969. Ruled in red throughout. Gilt dentelles and page edges. In 1744 Henry married his cousin Lady Catherine Pelham the daughter of the then Prime Minister Henry Pelham. Lord Lincoln was a devoted family man and was distraught when Catherine died in 1760 at the age of 33. He was in the circle of Horace Walpole, possibly even a lover. Although the mansion at Clumber was demolished in 1938, the famous Clumber Park remains, owned by the National Trust it is open to the public.
