The MSS…. were also kindly placed at my disposal by the family,” but an entirely new work had to be written by Mr. Sclater and Mr. Thomas, the latter contributing ” the synonomy and scientific descriptions,” and the former ” the ordinary letterpress.”” (Mendelssohn, South African Bibliography volume. 2,(1957) pg. 292). Illustrated with 100 full page, hand coloured lithographs by Joseph Wolf and J. Smith among others, and 121 engraved vignettes in the text. Recently rebound in brown calf with marbled boards and black endpapers. A number of the plates and pages with professional Japanese tissue repairs due to brittleness from acidity in the paper. The worst can be seen in one of the photographs supplied. Still a very good set, free from foxing. First edition. Condition: Very good, in new bindings with repairs to some plates and pages.
