New edition, thoroughly revised and augmented by R Bowdler Sharpe. 6 Parts in one volume. Xvii. Errata. 890pp. 12 Hand-coloured lithographs from drawings by J G Keulemans. 6 Original wrappers of the 6 parts bound-in at the rear. Recased with cloth boards, retaining original calf spine with gilt decoration and six raised bands. New end papers. Neat related marginalia (likely by Sharpe) throughout. Some foxing mostly to prelim pages. Original photograph of Layard tipped in as frontis. Newspaper cuttings tipped on to the free end papers and a hand-written letter dated May 31/81 by Bowdler Sharpe is tipped in behind the title page. It appears to be addressed to William Wesley, London, Agency of the Smithsonian Institution. It informs Wesley that Sharpe is making progress in The Birds of South Africa despite pressures of official work. The letter bears the blindstamp of the British Museum and is signed by Sharpe.
