Mussolini’s 16 speeches focussed on Italian economic policy during the first decade of Fascist rule, roughly 1922-1932: the need for economic self-sufficiency, industrial development, and social stability. Whilst his speeches often highlighted the role of the state in directing economic activity through public works projects, subsidies, and the creation of state-owned enterprises, they were also used to justify the Fascist regime’s authoritarian control over the Italian economy and its pursuit of ambitious, and ultimately unsustainable, economic goals.
