After retiring from his naval career, Allen Gardiner decided to become a missionary and sailed for the Cape in 1835. Despite hearing that war was expected to break out soon, he proceeded to Natal via Kaffraria. This is the account of the journey and of his successful meeting with the Zulu King, Dingaan. Re-bound in a plain blue buckram binding with a label to the spine. Previous owner’s bookplate to the new front endpaper and hand written name to the preserved original front feps including a hand coloured frontis.
