A small archive of mostly privately printed publications, two notebooks and a number of original family photographs. Acquired from the Marquard branch o the Murray family. Andrew Murray (1794 – 1866) was a Scottish Presbyterian minister who came to South Africa in on a call to find suitable ministers for the N.G. Kerk. He was ordained at Graaff-Reinet in 1822 as the successor to the Rev. Abraham Faure. He served there for almost 45 years, it being his first and only parish, although he did help in establishing numbers churches and missionary stations around the country. The collection consists of the following items: 1. An album containing 50 carte de visite and cabinet photographs of John Murray (brother of Andrew) and family. Last 3 pages loose. 2. Album of Charlotte Murray – Cape Town 0 October 1883. Bound into a later hardcover binding. Containing a number of hand-written quotations, some drawings, watercolours and flower-pressings. Included is her memorial programme from 1949. Charlotte Murray was the daughter of the Reverend Professor John Murray of the Theological Seminary of Stellenbosch. John was the son of Andrew Murray. 3. A copy of “Andrew Murrsay’s Diary of Voyage to Cape Town 1822” 24 pages printed and bound in card wraps. 4. “John Murray – Our Father’s Life. Told for our children and theirs.” A 24 page privately printed booklet, bound in card wraps. Published in 1926. 5. “The Murray Family Register 1794-1977” by Caroline Murray. Privately printed, 122 pg, bound in red card wraps 6. “Unto Children’s Children. Lives of the parents of the home at Graaff Reinet, with short sketches of the life of each of the children, and a Register.” By M.N. (Maria Neethling). Privately printed, 1909, and bound in cloth covered boards. A family history with a chapter devoted to Andrew Murray, another to his wife Maria and their home and church in Graaff Reinet, and a third chapter for their eleven children. Maria bore another five who died young. There is also a family register and extracts from Father Andrew’s diary. 7. “The Life of Andrew Murray of South Africa.” By J. Du Plessis, published Marshall Bros. 1917. A published account of Andrew Murray’s life. Signed by the author. Spine rebacked and new endpapers, an amateur repair. 8. Three printed family newsletters. December 1923, July 1924 and December 1928. 12, 12 and 22 pages. Some foxing. 9. “The Andrew Murray Family Register 1822-1931.” Privately printed, 76 pg. Card wraps, some foxing. 10. “Murray – Stamregister 1794 – 1954. Privately printed, card wraps, 80 pg. 11. “Isabella Hofmeyr.” A memoir of the 7th child of Andre and Maria Murray. The publication taking the place of the Family Newsletter for 1927. Photographic portrait and 36 pas. Card wraps, some foxing. 12. Autograph book of Janie van der Merwe of the Beaufort- West branch of the Murray family. Janie was the daughter of John Murray (1826-1882) and the sister of Charlotte Murray. Numerous hand-written quotes, some loose pages. 13. Two daguerreotypes of a young Andrew Murray the younger at about 18 years of age. Spines of both cases cracked.
