He gives an account of the settlement at Lily Fountain, and the progress of the missionary work amongst the natives. The volume contains “a history of the discovery of the grand promontory of the Cape of Good Hope,” together with chapters on the Hottentots, Bushmen, Corannas, Namaquas, Kaffirs, Bechuanas and [Vatwaas, Mantatees, Wankets and Maqueens]…, which afford one of the best descriptions of the native races of South Africa, published up to this period. There are also some notes on the fauna of the country, and many references to other pioneer missionaries. Mr Shaw returned to England in 1037, but he eventually went ack to South Africa and settled at Rondebosch, near Cape Town, where he died on June 21, 1857.” (Mendelssohn, South African Bibliography, Vol. 2, pg. 308, 1957).
