Signed by Goldblatt to the verso of the half title. Fine condition with a lightly edge worn dust jacket. Published in 1982 as the first book of Paul Alberts’ Gallery Press the book was not a commercial success. Alberts liked it to James Joyce’s Ulysses…ahead of its time. Goldblatt’s intention was to document the all-white Johannesburg suburb of Boksburg. Accumulating images of everyday activities that together present a disturbing and dystopian portrait of life in Boksburg. Goldblatt intentionally photographed his subjects without an overt photographic presence. He writes: Boksburg “is shaped by white dreams and white proprieties…Black are not of this town. They serve it, trade with it, receive charity from it and there are rules, rewarded and punished by its precepts. Some, on occasion, are its privileged guests. But all who go there do so by permit or invitation, never by right.” Shot in 1979 and 1980, the tone is reminiscent of Bill Owens’ Suburbia (1972). 1st Edition. Condition: Fine. Dust jacket: Very good. Lightly edge worn dust jacket. Binding: Hardcover.
