Hydro Philacium Africae. – Kircher, Athanasius
$164.10
Precipuum, in Montibus Lunae (Map of southern Africa showing sources of the Nile in a cavern beneath the Mountains of the Moon)
According to Kircher, the waters inside the Mountains of the Moon fed the Nile, but were part of a larger system of flowing waters hidden underground. This was based on an account of the ‘fountains of the Nile’ from a journal left by Peter Paez. Geographically there is very little accurate details, with a complete absence of coastal place names, though large lakes and rivers appear, including Lac Zaire and an unnamed lake to the east of it, together with numerous mountain ranges. No mention of the Cape of Good Hope appears. An attractive cartouche in the lower left corner surrounded by angels and cherubs. Margins trimmed. Some repairs into the neat lines. Some creasing and light foxing.
