Bound in black crushed Morocco. With a Cape Silver clasp by Lodewyk Willem Beck. Stamped “LB”. It is likely Lodewijk Williem Carl Beck, baptised at the Cape in 1785. He is known to have worked at Shortmarket Street 1842 to 1849, although a son of the same name could have taken over. Inscription in Dutch to the prelim. “Aan Andries Willem Beck from his friend J. Spyker. (Predekant), Kaapstad, 6 October 1836. Andries Willem Beck, baptised at the Cape in 1816, married Anna Maria Pentz in 1841. The inscription is dated when young Andries Willem would have been around the age of 21. Johannes Spyker is documented as an N.G. leraar (teacher) at the Cape. We purchased this Bible from a Pentz-Beck family member. Gilt to all page edges, with some embossed decoration. Stamp of the Zuid Africaansche Bybel Vereeniging to the title page.
