On advice from the Officials of the Territory Forces in Namibia at the time, a research team from the Academy in Windhoek spent time in the Kaokoland, Namibia researching and recording the history of the black Van der Merwe family who played a remarkable role in South Angola and Kaokoland. Klein Ruyter Ndlovu-Makadjeni spent 25 years under contract with G J L Van der Merwe who was the leader of the first Dorslandtrek out of the Transvaal and thus took the surname of Van der Merwe.
