A religious conduct manual aimed mainly at ‘women placed in the higher or in the middle classes of society’. Covering a range of topics, including the differences between men and women, female education, choosing a husband, raising children and how women should spend their free time. Unusual bookplate of “Arthur” Grove Annesley (1774-1849) with possible slave connections. James Annesley (1715-1760), possibly the grandfather had been sold into slavery by his uncle, in order to inherit the family estates. Years later James was able to escape and claim back the estates, possibly leading to the production of this unusual bookplate. Calf boards worn with an ink stain to the lower edge of front board. Spine rebacked with original laid over. Small blue ink stains to the front end papers which have seeped through to the end of the Contents page. Some light foxing to end papers. Toning to top edge. 448 Pages. Contents clean and binding firm. 5th Edition, Corrected. Condition: Very good. Binding: Hardcover. Leather boards with gilt to spine. Some abrasions.
