A complete set of the original first printing of Burton’s translation. 10 Volumes, bound in black cloth, with broad gold diagonal band on both covers and spine, enclosing lettering in black relief. Arabic designs in gold on both sides of cover. The colour of the cloth was specially chosen by Burton as representing the colour oath Abbaside banners and dress. It was originally a badge of mourning adopted for the Imam Ibrahim bin Mohammed, put to death by the Ommiade Caliph Al-Marwan. Vol. I appeared on September 12, 1885, six months later than promised in the prospectus. (Penzer, 1923, pg,. 114) The six supplemental volumes bound the same but with decorations in silver. In addition there is a complete set of Letchford’s illustrations, series AP. One hundred sets, astist’s proofs, with each plate signed by the artist and printed on Japanese vellum. This appears to be an unnumbered set in a plain black box. Although it appears as though sets my not have been numbered. Also included is a complete set of one hundred illustrations by Stanley L. Wood. Set number 2 of 250 artist’s proofs. Housed in a red cloth box. Some wear to the box with acid burn to the first page of “List of Plates. Otherwise all plates fine. There is also the original memorandum issued on the publication of volume 1, the prospectus announcing the publication of the supplemental volumes, a separate notice for the publication of volume six of the supplemental nights and advertisements for three other related books. Spines to all sixteen volumes have been re-backed with new black cloth and the remnants of the original spines pasted over. Some further insect damage to some of the volumes, neatly repaired. All bindings tight and secure, some with a slight lean to the spine. 1st Edition. Condition: Good. Binding: Hardcover.
