Tracing the beginnings and early development of the suburbs of Johannesburg in a series of over 325 historical picture postcards, most of them in colour. The book describes the earliest suburbs and areas of the mining town. There are chapters of events and disasters, eg. strikes, explostions and the Chinese on the mines. Beautiful images of architecture. Some browning to page edges of the prelims with light foxing. Boards are lightly sunned with smudges on the covers. Some light edge-wear. 8cm tear to lower edge of dust jacket with browning and some foxing to the edges of the verso.
