The diaries represent the observations of the first trained social anthropologist to carry out fieldwork in South Africa and what is now Namibia. Mrs Hoernlé undertook three field expeditions and was largely directed towards understanding the social and cultural systems of the Nama of the Little and Great Namaqualand. Illustrated with 3 maps.
