4to, vii, directions to the binder and 406 pp. plus 2pg. ads. Re-bound in a fine half leather binding with marbled boards and new endpapers. Some foxing to a few text pages but plates and map remain clean and bright. The author was appointed by the Directors of the Missions of the “United Brethren” to visit the settlements of Genadendal and Groenekloof. Upon his arrival at the Cape, the Governor expressed a wish that a third station should be opened and in order to choose a site, Latrobe traveled through a large part of the country, right up to the frontier on the Fish River. There is a description of the Groenekloof area and the hot springs around Caledon along with detailed accounts of Boer life in the outlying farm areas. Accompanied by Mr John Melville, Government Surveyor of the Cape, and others, the party set off for Zeekoegat near George, Welgelegen, Uitenhage and on to the Witte and Little Fish Rivers. Returning via a similar route but visiting Plettenberg and Mossel Bays. There is a large folding map showing the outward journey in red and the return in blue. There are 12 fine coloured aquatint plates and 4 black and white plates. Bookplate of Sir Alfred Lane Bait on the front fixed end paper. 1st Edition. Condition: Very good. Binding: Hardcover.
