Complete in 16 vols. Plus volume 3 of the Supplemental Nights in duplicate. Large 8vo’s with 114 illustrations, chiefly tissue-guarded plates, by at least 13 English and French artists; most uncredited, many borrowed from earlier editions (including nearly all of Letchford’s designs from the Nichols/Smithers issue.). Publisher’s cloth, gilt spine lettering and decoration to front and rear panels. The bindings are the same as the true first editions, by the Kamashastra Society; top edges red. Limitation statement in each volume, from an edition of 1,000 copies only. This set is numbered 502. Volume 9 however is from the original unillustrated first edition of 1885. This “Shammar Edition” is one of the “Catch-Word” editions of the Burton Club printings, produced semi-privately for subscribers. As Penzer observed, the “Burton Club” was “the nom de plume of a certain Boston publisher,” who acquired the electroplates of the Burton Society edition and from ca. 1903 onward issued a long series of reprints. None of the volumes bear dates; the series probably began in 1903 and continued well into the 1920s. Penzer identifies nine “Catch-Word” Burton Club editions — Benares, Mecca, Medinah, Aden, Baghdad, Samara, Bassorah, Shammar, and Luristan — appearing about every two years after 1905, though at least six others (Teheran, Baroda, Bombay, etc.) are also known. Ref: Penzer, Annotated Bibliography of Sir Richard Burton (1923), esp. pp. 121–126. This set will required additional shipping. Shammar Edition. Condition: Very good. Some light scattered foxing. Binding: Hardcover. Some general wear to the fragile black silk bindings. Chips to the head and foot of the spines and a few minor repairs.
