One of the most important and influential photographers of the nineteenth century. He travelled extensively around the Far East and became the first photographer to document the temple complex at Angkor in Cambodia. His major project was to systematically document all aspects of China: the landscape, industry, architecture, street people, etc. He eventually held a teaching position of photography at the Royal Geographical Society.
