This plate has been handcoloured and framed. Samuel died in Ceylon in 1811. After his death, his brother William obtained a number of sketches Samuel had done on an earlier expedition into the interior with Dr. Sommerville and Mr. John Barrow. William added: "He has merely to add with respect to the engravings, that he has endeavored to transfuse into them the spirit of the originals by a process which appeared to him best calculated for the attainment of that object." It is a most beautiful and sensitive work. One can well believe that William had not intruded himself but has indeed kept "the spirit of the originals."' Daniell's sketches are now highly regarded as an early and sympathetic record of African life.|~CSV~||~CSV~|1400|~CSV~|Africana|~CSV~|Art & Architecture (South African)|~CSV~|a|~CSV~|Africana;Art & Architecture (South African)|~CSV~||~CSV~||~CSV~||~CSV~||~CSV~|Print|~CSV~||~CSV~||~CSV~||~CSV~| sheet size: 23.5 x 28cm|~CSV~|N|~CSV~||~CSV~|N|~CSV~||~CSV~||~CSV~|N|~CSV~||~CSV~| Tag:
