A Series of Picturesque Views from Original Sketches|~CSV~| |~CSV~|Day and Son|~CSV~|1865|~CSV~|1865|~CSV~|A complete set of 20 coloured lithographs with descriptive text. Disbound and now housed in a custom solander box of green cloth. Condition is very good. Last two plates and accompanying text with some soiling, mostly to the margins. Some tissue repairs to the edges of a number of plates and text pages. It is stated that "perhaps no colony has been more frequently and variously described than that of the Cape of Good Hope; and yet there are few countries which have been so long under European domination, less known and appreciated abroad... The pen has often been employed to describe South African scenery and life, but hitherto no worthy attempt has been made pictorially to illustrate the peculiar features and characteristics of the country... The author visited and sketched every one of the localities in this series." The scenes depicted are confined, with one exception, to the Easter Province of the Colony and British Kaffraria, and are illustrative of that part of South Africa inhabited by the 1820 settlers. A letterpress description (by W.R. Thomson) accompanies each view, and the notes afforded give valuable information about the state of the country at this period. (Mendelssohn, South African Bibliography vol.1, pg.177) The subjects of the 20 coloured lithographs are as follows: Cape Point, H.M.S. "Birkenhead". Main Street, Port Elizabeth; Market Square, Port Elizabeth; Graham's Town from the Bay Road; Kowie, Looking Seaward; Fort Beaufort; Fuller's Hoek, Waterkloof in the Distance; Blinkwater Hill; Mount Misery, Waterkloof; Macomo's Den, Waterkloof; Blinkwater Drift; Fort Armstrong, Kat River; Peffer's Kop; Chumie; Kieskamma, Near Fort Cox, Amatola in the Distance; Burns' Hill Missionary Station; Yellowwood Drift, Lenye Valley; Wolf River; Boma Pass and King William's Town.|~CSV~||~CSV~|18000|~CSV~|Africana|~CSV~|Art & Architecture (South African)|~CSV~|a|~CSV~|Africana;Art & Architecture (South African)|~CSV~||~CSV~|2800|~CSV~|London|~CSV~|Solander box|~CSV~|Book|~CSV~|Very good|~CSV~||~CSV~||~CSV~|30 x 41cm|~CSV~|N|~CSV~|First edition|~CSV~|Y|~CSV~||~CSV~||~CSV~|N|~CSV~||~CSV~|
