The three Gibson brother immigrated to South Africa from England in the early 1870's at the start of the mining era. Shortly after arriving, two of the brothers secured a Cape cart and set out on the long journey to the diamond fields. Completely ignorant of the roads and watering places for their horses, they arrived 23 days later, a short while after diamonds had been discovered at Colesberg kopje. They immediately recognized the need for transport to convey passengers, mail and goods between Wellington, Kimberley and the goldfields of the Witwatersrand and together with their third brother started the Red Star Line and enjoyed great success. Condition: Good, some fading and a small area of loss to the top left.
