By 1887 Rhodes and Barnato were competing to buy shared in nearby mines and vying for commercial preeminence in the Kimberley diamond fields. In out-producing each other, they flooded the market, causing diamond prices to plummet. A merger was the only solution and on 12 March 1888 De Beers Consolidated Mines Limited was formed, with Cecil Rhodes named as the founding chairman. This photograph taken by J.E. Middlebrook, opposite the famous Kimberley Club, was to commemorate the event. Middlebrook is responsible for many of the historic images of the early mining days in Kimberley. His Premier Studio was in Du Toits Pan Road, Kimberley fromn 1888 - 1894.|~CSV~|Very good|~CSV~|11500|~CSV~|Geology/Mining|~CSV~|Photography|~CSV~|d|~CSV~|Geology/Mining;Photography;Diamonds|~CSV~||~CSV~||~CSV~|Kimberley|~CSV~||~CSV~|Print|~CSV~||~CSV~||~CSV~|Very good|~CSV~|26.5 x 34.5cm|~CSV~|N|~CSV~||~CSV~|Y|~CSV~||~CSV~||~CSV~|N|~CSV~||~CSV~|Diamonds
