Vol 1, blank, half title, veklaaring der Titelprint, engraved frontis, title pg., viii, 4 pg. subscribers, portrait, folding map (2 small stains), 5 dbl. pg. maps and 1 dbl. pg. view of Table Bay, 22 full page engraved plates (stain to plate at pg. 246), 529 pp. Vol. 2, blank, title pg., Kote Inhoud, 23 full pg. engraved plates, 449 pp., followed by an index. An excellent set with only light signs of use. Remnants of some silver paper to rear pastedown. Dust soiling to the vellum boards. Cracks to the head and foot of the spines of both volumes at the front boards, but endpapers and bindings firmly intact. Tumbing and some light foxing to the text pages. A definitive work on the Cape, in the Dutch edition, the author devotes 45 pages to mammals, 22 to birds, 24 to fishes, and 20 pages to snakes, insects and other animals. As did a lot of writers of natural history at the time, he was prone to including exaggerated tales. His discovery and description of a giraffe elicited much interest in Europe, and even though Julius Caesar had brought one to Rome in about 46 BC, no reliable source had produced compelling proof of the existence of this rather improbable creature.(A History of Scientific Endeavour in South Africa: Royal Society of SA, 1977).|~CSV~||~CSV~|70000|~CSV~|Africana|~CSV~|Natural History|~CSV~|d|~CSV~|Africana;Natural History;Cape; VOC|~CSV~||~CSV~|10000|~CSV~|Amsterdam|~CSV~|Hardcover|~CSV~|Book|~CSV~|Very Good|~CSV~||~CSV~||~CSV~||~CSV~|N|~CSV~|First Dutch Edition|~CSV~|Y|~CSV~||~CSV~||~CSV~|N|~CSV~||~CSV~|Cape; VOC
